Standing tall at 3,048 meters (10,000 feet), Japfu Peak is the second-highest mountain in Nagaland, located approximately 15 km south of Kohima at 25.5905° N, 94.0754° E. Unlike the gentle, rolling bamboo meadows of its famous neighbor, the Dzukou Valley, Japfu offers a rugged, steep, and demanding vertical trek culminating in astonishing panoramic views that stretch across the Naga Hills all the way to Assam on clear days.

Botanical Wonders
The World's Tallest Rhododendron
Japfu Peak holds an extraordinary botanical distinction. Deep within the dense forest on its slopes grows the tallest Rhododendron tree in the world, as officially certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Discovered in 1993, this massive tree stands over 130 feet tall. Exploring the forest to find this gigantic blooming specimen is extremely popular among botanists from around the world.
The Sub-Tropic to Alpine Climb
Because of the dramatic elevation gain, trekking Japfu is like walking through different climate zones. You start in dense, humid sub-tropical jungle at the base, transition through mossy temperate broadleaf forests midway, and finally emerge into a cold, wind-swept sub-alpine zone near the summit characterized by stunted shrubs and rocky outcrops.
The Watchtower View
The primary reward for the grueling climb up Japfu Peak is the view from the summit. From the crest, trekkers are treated to a literal bird's eye view directly down into the adjacent Dzukou Valley. While bringing a sweeping perspective of the entire valley basin, hikers can also trace the ridges all the way back across Kohima city and occasionally spot the Himalayan ranges on exceptionally crisp winter mornings.
Did You Know?
Because the peak sits directly in the path of the monsoon clouds striking the hills from the southern plains, Japfu is almost perpetually wreathed in clouds forming its own localized micro-weather system. It can be bright and sunny in Kohima town, while pouring freezing rain up on the Japfu slopes.
